Refurbishment of Entrance Walkways to Vestry House Museum – Grade II Listed Building
The Project
Floor Protection and Coverings:
Carefully removed the existing floor coverings and installed specified carpet solutions within designated walkway areas. This approach was taken to provide durable protection while preserving the original timber flooring underneath, a key feature of the historic building.
Decorative Repairs and Finishes:
Undertook a series of detailed decorating works, including surface preparation, repair, and redecoration of the main entrance lobby, adjoining rooms, and doorways. The finishes were matched to the existing aesthetics to maintain visual continuity and respect the building’s heritage.
Coordination with Museum Team:
Collaborated closely with the Museum staff to manage the safe relocation and temporary storage of sensitive and significant artefacts. Upon completion of the works, items were carefully reinstated into newly constructed display enclosures as per curatorial specifications.
Compliance & Building Control:
Liaised with Building Control and the LBWF throughout the project to ensure all works met the regulatory standards and achieved timely sign-off upon completion.

How We Solved The Problems
We were initially provided with a basic scope of works, specifying heritage paint and rubber-backed carpet requirements. Based on the client’s floor plans and final design documents, we collaborated to agree on a colour scheme for each marked area.
Before full application, sample paint patches were applied for review and approval by the designers and LBWF. K&J developed a detailed programme and sequencing plan, taking into account colour choices, accessibility, and the need to minimise disruption to museum operations.
Wall colours were outlined in design sketches, but each panel required on-site confirmation against the specified heritage palette. Weekly coordination meetings were held to review sample patches, with flexibility allowed for changes during the works. For the flooring, we sourced multiple carpet samples with rubber backing as requested. A final selection on style, brand, and colour was agreed during the pre-start meeting with all stakeholders and ordered promptly due to long lead times.
