Type of work: Alterations to move drainage runs
Site address: Southend Hospital – Renal unit
Renal ward – altering drainage runs
The Project
The works were to improve maintenance abilities to the drainage runs by altering the existing run to come to the outside of the building, run horizontally around picking up each sink etc around the perimeter of the building and then connecting to a suitable drainage point.
Kirkman and Jourdain assisted the client with a solution to protect the runs from the public as they walked past. We designed a metal covering withkeyed access points which was sprayed to match with the brickwork as best as possible.

Problems We Faced
The main issues we faced were working around a unit with critically ill patients that ran 7 days a week.
Also designing solutions as we found them working closely with the client as full access wasn’t available prior to start due to reasons above.

How We Solved The Problems
To overcome the issues we had to work a flexible programme to core the holes through the wall and alter the drainage whilst keeping the ward live and working for each morning with no disruption to the service.
By working closely with the client and our contractors wewere able to achieve the satisfactory results with no incidents thataffected patient care.
