Door conversion at University of Hertfordshire

A recent project at the University of Hertfordshire has seen the successful replacement of an existing double set of doors with a larger, single automated entrance — improving accessibility and functionality for campus users.

What initially appeared to be a straightforward door replacement quickly became more complex when it was discovered that the external floor levels were significantly out of alignment, preventing proper use of the new doorway. The location, situated along a heavily used pedestrian route, added an additional challenge that required careful planning to maintain safe access throughout the works.

The K and J team responded by fully enclosing the working area with sealed hoarding and carefully removing a section of brick paviours to construct a new platform and a gently ramped walkway. This ensured the pathway remained usable and compliant while maintaining a high standard of finish. All works were completed during the summer period to ensure the entrance was fully operational ahead of the new academic semester — ready for the return of students and staff.

The Department of Estates – Building Surveying team praised the collective effort, commenting:

“Many thanks to the team for getting this done. It is appreciated. A great collective effort to get this one over the line.”

This project demonstrates another example of the collaborative effort and professionalism from our dedicated team that ensures the University’s facilities continue to meet the needs of its growing community.
