School’s Emergency Flooding Response Works
The Project
In the summer of 2022, we had extremely heavy rainfall which caused major problems across the South-East of England. This has continued around August time every year since. Many of the roads and surrounding areas flood due to poorly maintained drainage. One are that was hit hard was the London Borough of Waltham Forest, with the most of this borough experiencing flooding.

The Project
Our process to remedy these emergency flood works:
- Initial attendance and make safe
- Provided dehumidifiers to assist with drying out the flooded rooms/floors
- Take up damaged surfaces and replace
- Checking and clearances of existing drainage

Future preventative flooding works for the schools:
- Supply and install Acco drainage channels across affected doorways
- Increase depth/size of existing gutters and outlets to take flow of excessive rainfall
- Ground levels altered to prevent surface water falling towards the building and doorways
- Holes and defective seals to walls/openings were closed up, particularly on older buildings
- Suggest for schools/London Borough of Waltham Forest to employ drainage/gutter clearance to be done regularly/quarterly
- Additional outlets formed on flat roofs to assist with reducing raised levels of sitting water and a backup outlet
- Flood barriers suggested and designed

Technical difficulties:
Since the works were completed in 2022-2023 we have resolved some of the ongoing flood issues with recent adverse weather. We have also spoken with senior designers for the local authority and advised on the need to keep green spaces (soakaways) and increase the drainage/gutter details to future proof their new builds.
